If you only hear from your IT provider when something breaks, that is a problem worth paying attention to.
A strong IT partner communicates proactively. Here are three things they should be bringing to you on a regular basis.
How your security posture has changed. Your threat landscape evolves constantly. Your IT provider should be telling you what new risks have emerged in your environment and what they have done about it, not waiting for you to ask.
What incidents occurred and how they were handled. Even minor events, a blocked threat, a failed login attempt, a flagged anomaly, should be reported. Silence is not a sign that everything is fine. It is often a sign that nobody is watching.
What they are doing differently than they were six months ago. IT is not a static service. Your provider should be improving their approach, adopting better tools, and communicating those changes to you. If nothing has changed on their end in a year, that is worth questioning.
